Job Summary

 

This position is located in Washington, D.C.

 

The Assistant Director will collaborate with internal colleagues and external partners to advance FIU's governmental relations agenda; implement impactful communications strategies; and produce research-focused programming at FIU in Washington. D.C. In particular, promote FIU's federal priorities and research agenda; work with department leadership on implementation of FIU and FIU in DC priorities; responsible for operation of overall communications program, across all channels; support the curation, development and production of all FIU in DC programming, signature events and activities; and position FIU research leaders in other third-party programs, events and conferences.

 

  • Core responsibilities include the development and implementation of communications plans and strategies to elevate FIU's advocacy efforts by drafting and editing communications, and distributing communications materials to various audiences and stakeholders, both internally and externally. Communications channels will include, but not limited to online web presence online and social media, regular newsletters targeting key stakeholders, high-quality printed and digital collateral, and immersive user experience at FIU in Washington, D.C Office (Electronic displays, etc.).
  • Manage the curation, development and production of FIU in DC programming, signature events and activities. Work closely with Office of Special Events, Protocol and Community Relations to ensure event standards are met. Collaborate with DC team for proper execution of events and activities including the use of office technology showcase platforms.
  • Lead strategies for managing the office's Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software platform; manage the curation of tailor-made guest lists for programs; and manage the cultivation and invitation of priority invitees. Of particular interest are federal agency officials; Members of Congress and staff; and FIU alumni in the Washington, D.C. metro area.
  • Positioning FIU researchers and faculty on national panels, conferences, symposia, and media partnerships, to raise FIU's profile.
  • Coordinating with related departments to further unit and university strategic goals related to communications and public relations. Supervision of communications intern.
  • Performs special projects, and other related duties as assigned or as directed. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that will support the overall mission of FIU in Washington, D.C.

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

Bachelor's degree and four (4) years of appropriate experience, or Master's degree and two (2) years of appropriate experience.

 

Desired Qualifications

 

  • Two to three years public relations and event management experience preferred.
  • Public Relations/communications agency or in-house higher education experience preferred.
