The Assistant Director, Legislation and Political Action is responsible for serving as a registered lobbyist for the College in advocating its views to Congress, proposing and implementing strategies and tactics to achieve the College’s public policy and legislative agenda; including directly lobbying Members of Congress and congressional staff on CAP issues and building and maintaining relationships with Members of Congress, congressional staff, and other health-care related organizations, and managing issue campaigns, influence-policy outcomes, and providing sound legislative and political analysis. The Assistant Director is also responsible for making judgments regarding strategic and tactical decisions, and operating with minimal supervision.

Qualified candidates must be highly self-motivated, with excellent communication skills, including, strong interpersonal skills, public speaking, and clear and concise written communications. Candidates must also be able to analyze and interpret legislative and regulatory documents, think strategically and devise action plans to advance legislative agenda and manage issues, implement strategies independently and make tactical decisions.  In addition, candidates should be familiar with legislative and regulatory documents and working knowledge of the legislative and regulatory process and politically attuned, have a solid knowledge of the legislative and political process and workings of the Hill and have the ability with a variety of computer applications, including Microsoft Word and Power Point.

A Bachelor’s Degree and at least 5 years’ experience with public policy issues, including prior work experience on Capitol Hill working with one of the committees of jurisdiction or for a member of the House or Senate Leadership are required. Established access to Members of Congress and key congressional staff and a background in health care legislative and/or regulatory issues are also required.Prior lobbying experience is preferred. Candidates with equivalent lobbying or political experience lobbying on health care issues for the private sector will also be considered.

This position will require 10 percent travel, including some weekends.
