Summary/Objective

The Assistant Vice President for Communications & Media, in consultation with the Vice President, other AVPs in UCM, and senior university leaders and administrators, develops, implements, and manages strategic communications to support AU's institutional priorities and brand/reputation goals. Serves as a spokesperson for the University, and works with school, college, and unit leadership to coordinate communications activities. Leads the UCM communications team to implement the overall communications strategy.

 

Responsibilities

The main responsibilities of this position include:

  • Develop, implement, and measure media relations and communications strategies and programs that support university goals, brand and reputational objectives, and the AU Strategic Plan
  • Identify events, faculty experts, students, and other university resources that will support positive coverage and enhance the reputation of American University
  • Consult with faculty members, deans, vice presidents, and other university administrators on public relations issues and strategies
  • Supervise the university's release of information to the media, draft statements and releases, manage internal review processes, and report on outcomes
  • Supports issues management activity and crisis communications
  • Fosters and facilitates a strong rapport with the news media to facilitate solid and responsible coverage of university, events, faculty, staff, students and programs
  • Manage the University Communications team. Drive a client-service model that enables UCM to provide strategic communications counsel and tactical support to the schools, colleges, and administrative units that advances university priorities and constituent-specific goals
  • Counsel university officials, including the President, on media opportunities
  • Respond to media inquiries regarding university policies, positions, programs, events, faculty, staff and students. Develop regular reports and manage assigned budgets
Work Environment

 

  • Normally performs their job indoors in an office environment
  • This position requires occasional travel as well as early morning, evening and weekend work to respond to breaking news, issues and crises

Salary Range
  • Commensurate with experience
Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Communication, Journalism and Public Affairs; or closely related field
  • 10+ Years Progressive experience in media relations, campaigns, and/or public affairs.
  • 3-5 years of management responsibilities
  • Demonstrated senior level management skills and capability with an emphasis on ability to plan and coordinate multiple complex programs
  • Ability to counsel senior executives
  • Excellent writing, editing and proofing skills
  • Demonstrated creativity and news judgment
  • A client-service approach to communications and excellent writing, verbal, and interpersonal skills
  • Mastery of social media best practices and monitoring tools, media relations and news distribution tools, web publishing/content management systems, and common office computer software programs (Outlook, Powerpoint, Excel, Word)
  • Experience and ability to work well and meet deadlines under pressure while handling multiple projects and issues
  • Excellent organizational and record keeping skills
  • Ability to research and understand the legal and political aspects of issues
