Job Details

The Humane Society of The United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest animal advocacy organization is seeking a Deputy Political Director, State Campaigns. The position will be responsible for promoting the animal protection goals of the Human Society Legislative Fund (HSLF) through programs, policies, legislative and political work focusing on activities within the state.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Developing a state political program that promotes HSLF’s political agenda within targeted states;
  • Executing and managing the HSLF state political program;
  • Identifying stakeholders, developing and managing coalitions within targeted states and districts that lead to a winning strategy for HSLF activities;
  • Developing, managing and building a national network of state based C-4s and state based PACs to support HSLF’s state based initiatives and to increase the overall influence of the animal welfare movement;
  • Developing and executing a training program for targeted state political organizations that furthers their development and political effectiveness within their state;
  • Developing and executing a state legislative candidate elections program, overseeing the coordination of all state campaigns of interest to HSLF, including coordination of coalition partners, animal protection groups, steering committee members, supporting organizations, volunteers, and all other aspects of a legislative campaign;
  • Developing and executing fundraising strategies and related activities to include speaking in targeted states at HSLF and partner state C4s and state PACSs events;
  • Ensuring that all related state election activities are in compliance with all guidelines and regulations issued by the Federal Election Commission and the individual state election laws, guidelines and regulations;
  • Managing daily HSLF activities within targeted states including outreach, strategies for continued growth of HSLF’s influence and providing reports to the Senior Political Director;
  • Developing and maintaining strong personal relationships with key legislators within the targeted states, with state party committees, and with other institutions, individuals, and organizations;
  • Serving as the primary HSLF political liaison between assigned state party committees and HSLF;
  • Leading HSLF’s conservative strategies for heightened visibility with key conservative members within the targeted states, party committees, and organizations;
  • Managing and serving as the primary HSLF contact for contribution requests for members of state legislatures;
  • Evaluating and making recommendations political contribution strategy to ensure maximum HSLF visibility within the targeted states.

 

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in political science or related field or equivalent experience;
  • Minimum of five or more years of experience in holding elected office, and/or political organizing and political fundraising;
  • Supervisory experience;
  • Compliance experience;
  • Familiarity with the state legislative campaigns and political caucus activities;
  • Familiarity with state legislators, staff, and state legislative districts;
  • Experience developing independent expenditure campaigns, developing, and managing 527 PACs, state PACs and C4s;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking skills;
  • Ability to manage budgets and complex reporting;
  • Ability to manage staff and volunteers;
  • Must be willing to travel;
  • Diplomacy and the ability to get along with diverse stakeholders;
  • Supervise volunteers and state campaign field staff.
