The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids is seeking a Director of Media Relations to serve as the organization’s primary point of contact with the media, write earned media materials, and help develop and implement communications strategies in support of federal policy goals, tobacco industry monitoring and other activities. Candidates should have strong writing and relationship-building skills, as well as a proven ability to work collaboratively, manage multiple projects and get results in a fast-paced environment.


This position is located in Washington D.C. and reports to the Vice President of Communications.




  • Lead media relations activities, including fielding incoming press calls, providing media with requested information, scheduling interviews, prepping spokespeople for interviews, proactively developing relationships with media (including reporters, producers and editorial writers) and pitching story ideas.


  • Help develop and implement communications strategies in support of federal policy goals, tobacco industry monitoring and other activities, such as new research.


  • Draft, edit and distribute high-quality media relations and other communications materials, including news releases and statements, op-eds, letters to the editor, editorial memos, talking points, blog posts, website copy and social media content.


  • Coordinate activities and projects with colleagues in other departments and partner organizations.


  • Manage external vendors on communications projects.


  • Plan and execute events such as press conferences, satellite media tours, media briefings and editorial board meetings.


  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of tobacco control issues. Monitor daily news coverage, ensure circulation of relevant news clips and analyze coverage to identify opportunities to advance organizational goals.


  • Other duties as assigned by the Vice President of Communications.






  • At least seven years of relevant experience, with a preference for work in journalism or advocacy/political communications; knowledge of Congress and federal government a must.


  • Significant knowledge of media relations and journalism, with demonstrated success in developing compelling media materials, identifying news hooks, placing media stories and building relationships with members of the media.


  • Strong organizational, strategic planning and project management skills.


  • Excellent writing, editing and verbal communications skills.


  • Commitment to the issue of tobacco control.
