The University of Maryland Philip Merrill College of Journalism is seeking a director to lead its Howard Center for Investigative Journalism. Funded by the Scripps Howard Foundation, the Howard Center will produce groundbreaking investigative projects while training the next generation of watchdog journalists. We are looking for someone with the vision, skills, ideasand commitment to carry out that dualmission.


The candidate will manage a multi-million dollar budget as well as be able to raise funds to sustain the center while managing groundbreaking investigative projects. Will appear in national and international publications and television outlets as a spokesperson for the center, and as an internationally recognized expert on the importance of investigative journalism for civil society and democracy. Be able to recruit top-notch journalists as fellows and visiting professionals, and help manage their investigative reporting projects. Recruit undergraduate and graduate students for research and investigative projects and cultivate interdisciplinary campus partnerships for collaborative research andstorytelling.


Bachelor’s degree required. Newsroom leadership or mentoring experience required as well as 10 or more years of professional experience. The position requires a deep understanding of investigative journalism, the ability to manage complex collaborations and an abiding commitment to mentoring student journalists. In addition to launching and shaping the center, the successful candidate will be an editor, a leader, a collaborator, and a powerful public advocate for the importance of investigative journalism in a democratic society. We arelooking for someone who is excited to explore new forms of storytelling and eager to mentor the next generation of investigativejournalists.
