Job Details

The Styrene Information and Research Center (SIRC), a Washington, D.C.-based trade association representing the manufacturers and users of the chemicals styrene and ethylbenzene, currently is seeking to fill the position of Executive Director to oversee day-to-day operations of the organization.  SIRC represents its members on public policy issues related to styrene and ethylbenzene; coordinates the industry’s health and environmental research programs; and provides communications resources on styrene for both the public and industry.

The executive director will serve as the Chief Administrative Officer of the organization, the members of which are companies that manufacture and/or use styrene and ethylbenzene, or manufacture styrenics-based products.  SIRC’s 30-year mission has been the advancement of research on styrene health and environmental effects, to understand the safety of styrene, ethylbenzene and styrenics products; the dissemination of that information to regulators, industry, and the public; and advocating for the fair assessment and regulation of styrene.

The position carries primary responsibility for managing SIRC’s advocacy issues, research program, and budget to achieve the group’s goals and objectives.  The executive director reports directly to the Chairman of SIRC, and its Steering Committee, and supervises one other in-office staff person, as well as several outside consultants who serve as adjunct staff. The executive director will also work to coordinate activities of the group with other U.S. industry groups representing styrenics manufacturers, other chemical industry groups, cross-industry advocacy groups, as well as coordinate with partner groups in Europe, Japan and elsewhere.

Ideal qualifications include an undergraduate and/or graduate degree in a pertinent field (government affairs, political science, toxicology, etc.), with at least 8 years of demonstrated progressive responsibility in a business, trade, government, or advocacy organization. Applicants will require solid leadership skills; strong written and oral communication skills; responsiveness, organizational management experience; budget oversight responsibility; skills in strategic thinking and strategy implementation; the ability to facilitate consensus among members; and the capability to work with other organizations and foster coordination across groups. Some advocacy experience with programs at federal and state agencies such as EPA, OSHA, FDA, and California EPA is highly desirable. Some level of scientific or technical competency relative to chemicals and/or plastics also is desirable, with the ability to learn and understand the basic science issues around styrene.  This position requires regular and timely presence at SIRC’s offices, occasional public speaking situations, limited domestic travel, and potential international travel.

SIRC is an equal opportunity employer. SIRC offers a salary commensurate with experience and a solid benefits package.  Relocation assistance is not currently anticipated. To apply for this position, please forward a cover letter, resume, and salary requirements to, no later than August 11, 2017.
