In coordination with Director of Congressional Affairs, the Grassroots Coordinator, plans and implements the federal grassroots advocacy program in order to impact federal and state legislation and advance the strategic goals of the Academy’s legislative agenda. Responsible for the planning and execution of legislative lobby days and coalition building to influence Members of Congress, impact federal legislation and maintain a strong presence of Capitol Hill.


  •          With the Director of Congressional Affairs, develops short and long-range plans to effectively utilize, build and strengthen the Academy’s grassroots program
  •          Maintains legislative grassroots spreadsheets/databases and promotes technological innovations to improve program efficiency and effectiveness
  •          Assists Congressional Advocates with building their relationships with members of Congress
  •          Plans and executes the Academy’s annual Congressional Advocacy Day and other targeted fly-in events
  •          Tracks and develops regular reports on the effectiveness of advocacy and communications efforts 
  •          Supports OPHTHPAC Committee members and federal advocacy coordinators (FACs) to ensure that they have the necessary support that they need to improve and grow the grassroots program in their targeted areas
  •          Performs other responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Congressional Affairs
  •          Assists with the development and distribution of appropriate email messages and action alerts, on both federal and state issues, to targeted members and conduct the necessary email and phone follow up to ensure action was taken
  •          Drafts articles for Academy publications
  •          Works with federal and state affairs staff to identify and develop connections with relevant health, patient and consumer groups at the national and state level




  •          Two to three years related work experience, preferably on Capitol Hill or with   an association with government relations/grassroots
  •          Knowledge of the legislative process, Capitol Hill and grassroots advocacy
  •          Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills
  •          Strong ability in database management
  •          Skilled in grassroots software programs, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Internet searches
  •          Ability in issue management, financial management, superior oral and written communications skills and creative problem solving
  •          Ability to develop annual strategic grassroots plan and create effective communications that increase grassroots communications to Capitol Hill
  •          Ability to convey concepts clearly and write effectively for each of various publication styles, including issue papers, web pages, newsletters, advocacy action alerts, year-end reports, event promotions, advertising copy and others
  •          Ability to oversee multiple high priority projects
  •          Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in political science or equivalent
