The primary duties and responsibilities of the job:

Undergraduate Laboratories

Equipment and Supplies

  • Order all supplies required for each undergraduate laboratory course prior to the start of each semester.
  • Work with WSE machine shop to ensure that all parts required for upcoming laboratories are available in advance.
  • Review all laboratory equipment prior to each semester to ensure that it is functioning properly when needed.
  • Set up equipment for upcoming laboratories.
  • Break down and store laboratory equipment when it is no longer needed for the semester.
  • Work with course instructors to create supporting structures as needed for design projects.
  • Maintain records of expendables required by each undergraduate laboratory course.
  • Develop and manage an electronic database inventory of all tagged asset equipment.
  • Schedule and manage maintenance of laboratory equipment as needed.
  • Manage any necessary moving and off-campus storage of equipment.

Facilities

  • Prepare laboratory facilities as needed prior to the start of each semester.
  • Reset laboratory facilities as needed at the end of each semester.
  • Manage J-Card and key access to all undergraduate laboratories.
  • Manage all necessary facility repairs.
  • Work with JHU operations and facilities as needed to address all laboratory facility issues in a timely manner.
  • Manage off-campus Mechanical Engineering storage space.

Budgetary

  • Purchase equipment and supplies directly from vendors as needed.
  • Maintain detailed records of purchases and other undergraduate laboratory expenditures.
  • Assist in developing annual undergraduate laboratory budget, including expected equipment maintenance and repair costs.

IT

  • Maintain all mechanical engineering instructional software licenses.
  • Purchase and install hardware and software as requested by lab instructors.
  • Maintain printers (including maintaining a continuous supply of paper and toner).
  • Reserve JHU instructional computer laboratories as requested by lab instructors.
  • Work with JHU Central IT and WSE IT to address network connectivity issues as needed.

Safety

  • Promote safe practices and ensure that all rules and safety regulations are maintained and followed.
  • Review all new equipment and experiments for potential safety issues.
  • Review all laboratory facilities prior to scheduled safety audits and alert instructors of any safety issues which require attention.
  • Be the Mechanical Engineering primary contact for the various safety groups on campus (WSE Safety Office, JHU Safety Office, JHU Security, JHU Department of Health, Safety and Environment, etc.).

Research Laboratories

  • Instruct research laboratory personnel on general laboratory procedures as needed.
  • Review all research laboratory facilities prior to scheduled safety audits and alert faculty of any safety issues which require attention.
  • Assist faculty in working with JHU operations and facilities as needed to address research laboratory facility issues.
  • Develop and manage an electronic database inventory of all tagged asset equipment.

Senior Design

  • Instruct senior design students on general laboratory-related procedures as needed.
  • Review all proposed design projects with the senior design instructors prior to the start of the Fall semester to identify potential safety issues.
  • Work with senior design instructors, students, and JHU safety groups to mitigate all project safety concerns.

Training

  • Request training as needed to ensure that all duties and responsibilities are met
  • Additionally, as requested, assist the JHU development office during presentations, meetings, give tours, and talk with potential sponsors to JHU

Qualifications

Minimum of a bachelors degree and/or equivalent education and training in engineering and teaching laboratory operations. Requires 4 years of management in an educational environment or research institute focused on mechanical engineering and laboratory operations.

Additional information:

  • High level of sound, independent judgment and the analytical ability to resolve complex technical and administrative problems.
  • The Lab Manger will proactively communicate with key customers such as Faculty, staff, students, and vendors to resolve issues and ensure smooth operation of all lab activities in a timely manner.
  • Substantial interpersonal skills necessary to manage and direct activities of staff and assist students and faculty.
  • Ability to foster and maintain cooperative interdepartmental working relationships, and to work closely with faculty, staff, students, vendors, outside account and other departmental laboratories.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of related experience preferred.
  • Proven comprehensive knowledge of laboratory management and laboratory administration, preferably in a large research and teaching environment.
  • Thorough knowledge of OSHA guidelines as they apply to laboratory management.
  • Thorough knowledge of laboratory equipment, data acquisition and control systems, robotic and material test systems.
  • Thorough operational knowledge of personal computers, workstations, and networking hardware.
  • Computer knowledge of CAD, word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentations and Web-based design software is required

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
