The Department of Oncology is currently searching for a full time Research Program Assistant II (RPA) for Cancer Immunology/GI Clinical Research. The RPA II is responsible for independently coordinating blood and tissue banking protocols to ensure proper collection and handling of samples. Responsible for collection and handling, and transporting of patient samples to ensure quality samples. Responsible for vital signs and drawing blood. Responsible for ordering archival tissue from internal and external sources.

Prepare research kits, verify kits with protocol and lab manual. Responsible for attending clinical trial biopsy procedures as stated in clinical trial protocols. Maintain current documentation on all clinical trial procedures to adhere to clinical trial compliance. Serves as department liaison with outside support groups, i.e. pathology, radiology, and multiple research laboratories both in-house and third-party. Ability to anticipate daily changes in schedule, maintaining a smooth patient flow. Uses universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials, including blood-borne pathogens.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Excellent IV and phlebotomy skills; obtains clinical trial-driven blood samples, processes, stores, labels and ships, as appropriate per each individual clinical trial, ensuring quality samples.

Independently arranges courier service, as needed for transport of clinical trial blood and tissue samples.

Prepare kits and maintain inventory

Attend clinical trial required biopsy procedures

Audits to ensure specimen quality assurance maintained, consistently throughout clinical trial

Attend all required staff meetings.

Attend protocol SIVs.

Track all specimen collection and follow up calls.

Perform accurate and timely data collection on source

Comply with all regulatory and institutional requirements.


High School Diploma/GED and two years related experience. Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.


Bachelor's degree, two years of clinical/hospital setting experience working in direct clinical care role, experience working in Oncology setting, and CNA or CMA certified desired.

Salary: $13.72 - $18.87

Status: Full-Time

Work Schedule/Hours: Monday-Friday/8:30-5:00pm/40 hrs.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.


The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
