The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) is an individual membership professional organization representing more than 100,000 member physical therapists (PTs), physical therapist assistants (PTAs), and students of physical therapy. APTA seeks to improve the health and quality of life of individuals in society by advancing physical therapist practice, education, and research, and by increasing the awareness and understanding of physical therapy's role in the nation's health care system.

In coordination with the Director of Congressional Affairs and the advocacy staff, this position assists with leading the strategic direction and implementation of the Association’s public policy and advocacy initiatives with the U.S. Congress and federal agencies.  Acts as a representative of the Association in lobbying, member relations, strategic alliances, and policy development initiatives to advance physical therapy.    Provides member service, outreach and education on government affairs and public policy issues.

  • Attends and represents APTA at hearings and briefings on Capitol Hill pertaining to the Association's policy interests

  • Works with Congressional Committees of jurisdiction to craft legislation and influence policy making in the short and long term

  • Prepares materials for external audiences on APTA's policy issues including position papers and issue briefs

  • Assists with execution of grassroots activities, including Key Contacts and Federal Affairs Liaisons

  • Represents APTA before external agencies and organizations relevant to government affairs

  • Liaison to selected APTA Components regarding policy priorities, speaker to association stakeholders.

  • Keeps membership informed of vital issues by maintaining APTA website, articles, and responding to inquiries.



  • 6+ years’ experience with federal government/legislative affairs, or acquired experience in formulating and advancing federal legislative and regulatory policy
  •        Undergraduate degree in health area or equivalent related experience
  •        Hill experience working on health issues preferred
  •        Knowledge of Political Action Committees helpful
  •        Excellent interpersonal skills
  •        Excellent organizational, communication, and strong professional writing skills
  •        Excellent public speaking ability
  •        Strong computer/database experience required
